Federico Capasso
Federico Capasso, Italian physicist transplanted in the United States, recounts his fascinating adventures of researcher and his experience as a manager at the legendary Bell Labs, the leading industrial research center in the world. His interdisciplinary studies, the boundary between basic research and applied research, have opened new horizons to the physics of nanostructures, photonics, electronics and materials science. Of particular relevance are his pioneering research on engineering and artificial semiconductor quantum devices, most notably the revolutionary invention of quantum cascade lasers, and his recent research on the effect Casimir. A story, says the author, "that perhaps could be of help to young people aspiring to scientific careers, because there is a "life important" behind to be successful, but many "small and seemingly insignificant steps."
